Simple Ways To Prevent Cancer
Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the human body. This medical condition is painful and expensive. It can affect any part of the body. As per a study conducted by Cancer Research UK, cancer accounts for 40 percent of all premature adult deaths. This means, more people fall victim to cancer than to medical conditions like AIDS, heart disease and stroke.
Thomas A. Sellers says, “As many as 70 percent of known causes of cancers are avoidable and related to lifestyle.” Sellers is the associate director for cancer prevention and control at Moffitt Cancer Canter in Tampa.
Here are some ways to prevent cancer.
Plant-based diet if found to be effective in preventing cancer. It is advisable to include grains, vegetable, beans and fruits in your daily diet. Consume foods that are rich in fiber regularly. Eat brown rice instead of white rice. Consume baked potato (with the skin) instead of mashed potato. Use olive oil instead of regular vegetable oil. Avoid fast foods, fried food and processed foods. Consume foods that are rich in antioxidants.
Research studies have proved that vegetarians are 50 percent less likely to develop cancer than non-vegetarians. Avoid foods with saturated fats and trans fats. It is advisable to consume foods with unsaturated fats. These are obtained from plant sources and are liquids in room temperature. It is also advisable to consume foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Drink plenty of water. Wash fruits and vegetables before eating.
A research study conducted at Copenhagen in 2004 has effectively established the relationship between physical activity and cancer. The study analyzed the data obtained from 5,000 men over a period of 23 years. According the study, moderate physical activity boosts the immune system, thereby preventing cancer.
Avoid tobacco products
Cigarettes and other tobacco products (like snuff and chewing tobacco) increase the risk of cancer immensely. According to a survey, lung cancer is the most preventable form of cancer death in the world. Besides acute myeloid leukemia and lung cancer, tobacco use causes cancers of the lips, mouth, nasal cavity and sinuses, colon, esophagus, pharynx, larynx, stomach, kidney, pancreas, bladder, uterus, cervix and ovary.
Minimize use of plastics to store water
Use filtered water instead of bottled water. Avoid storing water in plastic containers. You may store in glass or stainless steel containers. Cancer causing chemicals like BPA can leach from plastic bottles.
Avoid inhaling exhaust fumes from vehicles
According to WHO, diesel engine exhaust is a carcinogenic. Dr Christopher Portier says, “Given the additional health impacts from diesel particulates, exposure to this mixture of chemicals should be reduced world wide.”
Take care while using cell phones
It is always advisable to use a hands free device. Many studies suggest a link between radio frequency energy emitted by cell phones and brain cancer.
Prevent exposure to direct sunlight
Selecting appropriate outfit goes a long way in preventing skin cancer. Always use a hat. As per a study, blue and red cloths provide better protection than white and yellow cloths.
By modifying your lifestyle in accordance with the above-mentioned guidelines, you are less likely to be affected by cancer.
